Reduce Crow's Feet

Crow's feet or smile lines, some people don't mind this, but you came here because you want to reduce the visibility of your crow's feet. When wrinkles begin to betray our age, most people still wonder how to treat crow's feet. Prevention is always easier than cure, including when it comes to crow's feet. The skin around the eyes is one of the first areas of the face to develop fine lines, fissures and wrinkles that we recognize as crow's feet.

Is there anything we can do to prevent crow's feet? Can anything be done to reduce crow's feet if they are already visible on the surface? We are going to answer these questions for you.

Unfortunately, wrinkles and aging are a natural part of life that cannot be prevented, but it can be postponed. Getting rid of crow's feet is certainly possible. We have listed various treatments for crow's feet for you, ranging from facials in our salon in Amsterdam to an eye wrinkle-filling serum and eye mask to get started at home.

7 Most Common Causes of Crow's Feet

Crow's feet are also known as "smile lines", "expression lines", or "character lines" because they are partly caused by our usual facial expressions. But how can temporary muscle contractions when smiling or squeezing result in permanent fine lines? Let's take a look at the science behind wrinkling to understand.

1. Using wrong products

The skin around the eyes is slightly thinner and more sensitive and therefore the first place where wrinkles in the form of crow's feet appear. In addition, most people also use their regular day and night creams or serums on the eye area in the hope that this will help against crow's feet.

This is a big mistake many people make and can even cause crow's feet or water bags. Creams or serums not intended for the eye area are usually too greasy or contain too high a concentration of ingredients that damage or dry out the skin, resulting in aggravation of crow's feet. With the right eye creams and serums you reduce crow's feet and postpone their appearance for as long as possible.

Eye serum against crow's feet

The showpiece among the eye serums is La Colline Eye Lift Essence. This special serum fills the lines of crow's feet, drains excess moisture around the eyes and firms the skin around the eyes.

2. Collagen Breakdown

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body, made up of several amino acids. It is located in the connective tissue and is responsible for the structure, strength and volume of the skin, hair, nails, bones, ligaments and tendons. Over time, our body loses the ability to make collagen, causing collagen to gradually decline.

Collagen usually makes up 75% of the skin organ, but as this ratio decreases, our skin loses its support and suppleness. Collagen fibers keep skin upright and wrinkle-free, and an enzyme called collagenase helps break down old or damaged collagen so new collagen can take its place. When we are young, collagen is broken down at the same rate as it is made, but as we age, it is produced more slowly and its breakdown increases. The result is less new collagen and less existing collagen, resulting in wrinkles, lines and sagging

3. Elastin breakdown

Like collagen, the production of elastin also decreases as we age. Like an old rubber band, it hangs limp instead of pulling back, exposing crow's feet on the outside of the eyes.

Elastin is another protein found in the dermis and connective tissue. It has an elastic property that allows skin cells to regain their shape and "spring back" after being stretched, contracted, punctured or pinched.

4. Breakdown of Fat

The subcutis (or bottom layer of skin) contains sweat glands, loose connective tissue and, most importantly, fat. When this layer of fat is reduced, it can cause crow's feet, wrinkles and general sagging. With age, the fat in the subcutaneous tissue decreases. When fat is lost in the face, facial volume decreases, meaning there is less surface area for the skin to cover. However, we still have the same amount of skin, causing the tissue to fall over itself and create folds or wrinkles.

5. Dry Skin

Moisture is a key element in the prevention of crow's feet; when the skin is dry and brittle, it is more prone to lines and wrinkles. Moisture in the form of hyaluronic acid is essential for dry skin

6. Hyaluronic Acid Breakdown

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in our skin and joints. HA helps our skin attract and retain moisture, which can counteract signs of aging such as crow's feet. Hyaluronic acid serums and supplements have been shown to reduce crow's feet, improve skin elasticity and boost skin firmness in just a few weeks.

As you get older, the level of hyaluronic acid in your skin naturally decreases, and your skin can no longer produce it as efficiently as it used to. This is one of the reasons why your skin thins and wrinkles appear as you age. The levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin begin to decline by age 40.

7. Muscle movements such as laughing and squinting

The main cause of crow's feet is the wrinkles that are the result of movement and muscle movements - in contrast to the wrinkles at rest, which arise independently of movement and are caused by intrinsic and photo-aging. At some point, based on several factors discussed in detail below, the repetitive motions eventually create wrinkles deep enough that appear even when no expression is made. If you know how wrinkles form, you will know better how to reduce crow's feet and how to prevent them from appearing in the first place for as long as possible. Some aging processes are unavoidable, while others can be exacerbated by lifestyle choices. Let's take a look at how to prevent crow's feet by sharing our wrinkle formation knowledge with you.

Treat or prevent crow's feet without Botox

Getting rid of crow's feet is generally easier than getting rid of the pronounced furrows or wrinkles that you may find elsewhere on the face. Crow's feet treatment fights the fine lines in the skin around your eyes, which are generally shallow and easy to reach. However, they do get deeper as you get older, so it's best to start treating crow's feet as soon as possible. The easiest way is a botox injection to relax the muscles, but most people want to postpone this as long as possible.

Dermapen fights crow's feet

The dermapen treatment is a form of microneedling and is extremely suitable for crow's feet and laugh lines. Our Dermapen treatment in Amsterdam is virtually painless and the production of collagen and elastin is therefore produced in a natural way by the body.

Sunscreen helps prevent crow's feet

Sunscreen is paramount in preventing crow's feet. Unprotected sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging. Exposure to UVA and UVB sun rays leads to accelerated wrinkle formation and a weakening of the skin's vitality. Radiation is known to damage DNA and proteins by damaging free radicals.

Instead of wondering how to get rid of crow's feet, start wearing at least SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen every time you go outside. Remember that UV rays can penetrate car windows and even the cloudiest skies, so there's no excuse not to put on sunscreen and of course wear sunglasses. Our favorite to prevent crow's feet is Medik8 Physical sunscreen with SPF50. If you also spend a lot of time behind a laptop or on your mobile, we recommend Murad City Skin on with SPF 50

What you can do yourself to prevent crow's feet

Eat healthy fats
One of the best things you can do for the health of your skin — and your overall health — is eating a healthy diet with plenty of fat (but the right kinds!). Unsaturated fats (including both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) provide the body with many benefits, including lower cholesterol and a reduced risk of heart disease, but they also help keep your face soft and voluminous. If you're looking for an easy solution to prevent crow's feet, try eating more foods like:

Limit your sugar intake
With regard to diet, make sure you not only get good nutrition, but also avoid unhealthy foods – especially sugar – to prevent crow's feet. An excess of sugar in the bloodstream binds to collagen, so that collagen no longer functions properly. This process is also called glycation. Sugar also causes inflammation, which causes collagen and elastin to break down. Limit your sugar intake where possible.

Stop smoking
If you're still smoking, it's time to quit. Tobacco smoke is a huge accelerator of premature aging and may force you to seek crow's feet treatment much sooner than non-smokers. Smoking (and being around secondhand smoke!) not only triggers the inflammatory process, but it also releases free radicals into your system that can linger for days.

Buy reading glasses
Any repeated facial expression involving the skin around your eyes contributes to crow's feet, especially if you squint. As you get older and your vision starts to deteriorate, buy reading glasses to keep your eyes wide and wear them when you need to. Squinting at your computer screen at the office or at home having trouble reading the text of a book is one of the main causes of crow's feet, so make sure to avoid this bad habit.

The best cream is a cream with hyaluronic acid that is made so small that it reaches the deeper layers of the skin. Forlle'd is the only brand that has made the hyaluronic acid molecules so small that they can work deep into the skin. They even won a Nobel Prize for this. Crow's feet are caused by excessive contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle.

Yes, taking a collagen supplement helps in the prevention and reduction of crow's feet. As we age, the body produces less collagen and the collagen we have becomes of poorer quality and breaks down. This leads to the formation of crow's feet. Several studies have shown that collagen helps against wrinkles such as crow's feet and laughter lines.

Yes, hyaluronic acid in the form of supplements or creams and serums helps against crow's feet. It is important here that the hyaluronic acid molecules are made so small that they can penetrate the skin. Forlle'd is the only brand that has been able to make them so small that they actually do something in the inner layers of the skin.
