How does dry skin develop?

Dry skin is one of the most common skin problems that many people suffer from, especially in the cold winter months. Dry skin can very well be due to your skin care products such as the wrong cleanser. If the face is regularly washed with soap, the skin fats disappear, so that the moisture evaporates easily and the skin becomes dry. Another reason may be that you shower too often or too hot. This has the same effect: the skin oils are washed away. But you may also have certain conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and diabetes. This is because dry skin often occurs. But bad lifestyle habits also have a major influence, such as smoking, drinking and unhealthy eating. And in the winter months dry skin can be caused by the central heating.

The skin protects the face against harmful external influences. We call this the barrier function. This is regulated by the horny layer: the top layer of the skin. This consists of fats and dead skin cells. Usually the evaporation of moisture through the skin is well regulated and balanced. But when the fats in the skin decrease, the skin becomes more permeable to water. As a result, the moisture balance in the skin becomes unbalanced and the skin dries out.
