What Causes Wrinkles?

Slow production of skin cells, thinning skin layers and a lack of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid cause wrinkles

Collagen is a protein in your body that gives your skin structure. It provides stretch or elasticity so you can move easily. Your skin is like a rubber band. If that rubber band stretches or moves too much, it will loosen and lose its ability to spring back to its normal size and shape. When your body cells age, their ability to produce proteins slows down. This makes it harder for your rubber band to return to its original shape, causing wrinkles.

Several factors that accelerate wrinkles

Aging
Wrinkles are a byproduct of the aging process. As people age, skin cells divide more slowly and the middle layer of the skin – the dermis – becomes thinner. The dermis has a network of elastin and collagen fibres, which provide support and elasticity. As this network loosens and loosens, wrinkles appear on the skin's surface. Aging skin is also less able to retain moisture, secretes oil less efficiently and heals more slowly. All these factors contribute to the appearance of wrinkles.

Facial muscle contractions
Lines on your forehead, between your eyebrows (frown lines) and in the corners of your eyes (crow's feet) are caused by small muscle contractions. Laughter, frowning, strabismus and other common facial expressions make wrinkles stand out. Over time, these expressions combined with gravity contribute to the formation of wrinkles.

Sun damage
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can lead to premature aging of your skin, known as photo-aging. Exposure to UV light breaks down collagen fibers and leads to abnormal elastin production. When ultraviolet light damages skin tissue, your body produces an enzyme called metalloproteinase. This enzyme creates and reforms collagen. However, during this process, some healthy collagen fibers become damaged, resulting in zonal elastosis – the disorganized formation of fibers. Wrinkles form when the rebuilding process takes place over and over again, but each time less efficiently.

To smoke
Healthy skin is constantly regenerating. Old collagen breaks down and removes itself from your body, making room for new collagen. Researchers found that smoking reduces the production of new collagen. Decreased collagen leads to the appearance of wrinkles.

Environmental factors
Pollutants such as particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide in the air can cause the collagen in your body to break down as the pollution enters your pores. The most common pollutants in your environment that cause wrinkles are:
