7 common causes of crow's feet

Crow's feet are also known as "laugh lines", "expression lines", or "character lines" because they are partly caused by our usual facial expressions. But how can temporary muscle contractions when smiling or squinting result in permanent fine lines? Let's look at the science behind wrinkle formation to understand it.

1. Using the wrong products

The skin around the eyes is slightly thinner and more sensitive and therefore the first place where wrinkles in the shape of crow's feet appear. In addition, most people also use their regular day and night cream or serums on the area around the eyes in the hope that this will help against crow's feet.

This is a big mistake that many people make and can even cause crow's feet or moisture bags. Creams or serums that are not intended for the eye area are usually too greasy or contain too high a concentration of ingredients that damage or dry out the skin, worsening crow's feet. With the right eye creams and serums you can reduce crow's feet and delay their appearance for as long as possible.

Eye serum against crow's feet

The showpiece among the eye serums is La Colline Eye Lift Essence. This special serum fills in the lines of crow's feet, drains excess moisture around the eyes and strengthens the skin around the eyes.

Special eye mask against crow's feet

2. Collagen breakdown

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body, consisting of several amino acids. It is located in the connective tissue and is responsible for the structure, firmness and volume of the skin, hair, nails, bones, ligaments and tendons. Over time, our body loses the ability to produce collagen, causing collagen to gradually decrease.

Collagen usually makes up 75% of the skin organ, but as this ratio decreases, our skin loses its support and suppleness. Collagen fibers keep the skin upright and wrinkle-free, and an enzyme called collagenase helps break down old or damaged collagen so that new collagen can take its place. When we are young, collagen is broken down at the same rate as it is produced, but as we age it is produced more slowly and the breakdown increases. The result is less new collagen and less existing collagen, resulting in wrinkles, lines and sagging

3. Elastin breakdown

Just like collagen, elastin production also decreases as we age. Like an old rubber band, it hangs limp instead of retracting, revealing crow's feet on the outside of the eyes.

Elastin is another protein found in the dermis and connective tissue. It has an elastic property that allows skin cells to regain their shape and “spring back” after being stretched, contracted, pricked or pinched.

4. Breakdown of fat

The subcutis (or lower layer of skin) contains sweat glands, loose connective tissue and, most importantly, fat. When this fat layer is reduced, it can cause crow's feet, wrinkles and general sagging. As we age, the fat in the subcutaneous tissue decreases. As fat is lost from the face, facial volume decreases, meaning there is less surface area for the skin to cover. However, we still have the same amount of skin, which causes the tissue to fall over itself and create folds or wrinkles.

5. Dry skin

Moisture is a key element in preventing crow's feet; When skin is dry and brittle, it is more prone to lines and wrinkles. Moisture in the form of hyaluronic acid is essential for dry skin

6. Hyaluronic acid breakdown

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in our skin and joints. HA helps our skin attract and retain moisture, which can counteract signs of aging such as crow's feet. Hyaluronic acid serums and supplements have been shown to reduce crow's feet, improve skin elasticity, and boost skin firmness in just a few weeks.
As you age, the level of hyaluronic acid in your skin naturally decreases, and your skin can no longer produce it as efficiently as it used to. This is one of the reasons why your skin thins and wrinkles appear as you age. The levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin begin to decline at age 40.

7. Muscle movements such as laughing and squinting

The cause of crow's feet are mainly the wrinkles that result from movement and muscle movements - in contrast to the wrinkles at rest, which arise independently of movement and are caused by intrinsic and photoaging. At some point, based on several factors discussed in detail below, the repetitive movements eventually create wrinkles that are deep enough and that appear even when no expression is made. If you know how wrinkles form, you will know better how to reduce crow's feet and how to prevent them from appearing in the first place for as long as possible. Some aging processes are inevitable, while others can be exacerbated by lifestyle choices. Let's see how crow's feet can be prevented and share our knowledge about wrinkle formation with you.

Treat or prevent crow's feet without Botox

Getting rid of crow's feet is generally easier than getting rid of the pronounced furrows or wrinkles found elsewhere on the face. Crow's feet treatment targets the fine lines in the skin around your eyes, which are generally shallow and easy to reach. However, they do deepen as you get older, so it's best to start treating crow's feet as soon as possible. The easiest way is an injection of Botox to relax the muscles, but most people want to postpone this for as long as possible.

Sunscreen helps prevent crow's feet

Sunscreen is of utmost importance in preventing crow's feet. Unprotected sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging. Exposure to UVA and UVB sun rays leads to accelerated wrinkle formation and a weakening of the skin's vitality. Radiation is known to damage DNA and proteins through harmful free radicals.

Instead of wondering how to get rid of crow's feet, start by wearing at least SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen every time you go outside. Remember that UV rays can penetrate car windows and even the cloudiest skies, so there's no excuse not to apply sunscreen and, of course, wear sunglasses. Our favorite to prevent crow's feet is Medik8 Physical sunscreen with SPF50. If you also spend a lot of time behind a laptop or on your mobile phone, we recommend this Apply Murad City Skin with SPF 50

What you can do yourself to prevent crow's feet

Eat healthy fats
One of the best things you can do for your skin health – and your overall health – is to eat a healthy diet with enough fat (but the good kinds!). Unsaturated fats (including both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) provide the body with many benefits, including lower cholesterol and a reduced risk of heart disease, but they also help keep your face soft and plump. If you're looking for a simple solution to prevent crow's feet, try eating more foods like:

Limit your sugar intake
When it comes to nutrition, make sure you not only get good nutrition, but also avoid unhealthy foods – especially sugar – to prevent crow's feet. An excess of sugar in the bloodstream binds to collagen, causing collagen to no longer function properly. This process is also called glycation. Sugar also causes inflammation, which causes collagen and elastin to break down. Limit your sugar intake where possible.

Quit smoking
If you still smoke, it's time to quit. Tobacco smoke is a huge accelerator of premature aging and can force you to seek crow's feet treatment much sooner than non-smokers. Smoking (and being around second-hand smoke!) not only starts the inflammatory process, but it also introduces free radicals into your system that can linger for days.

Buy reading glasses
Any repetitive facial expression that involves the skin around your eyes contributes to crow's feet, especially if you squint. As you get older and your vision begins to deteriorate, buy reading glasses to keep your eyes wide and wear them when necessary. Squinting at your computer screen at the office or struggling to read the text of a book at home is one of the leading causes of crow's feet, so make sure you avoid this bad habit.

Yes, taking collagen supplements helps prevent and reduce crow's feet. As we get older, the body produces less collagen and the collagen we have becomes of poorer quality and breaks down. This leads to the formation of crow's feet. Several studies have shown that collagen helps against wrinkles such as crow's feet and laugh lines.

Yes, hyaluronic acid in the form of supplements or creams and serums help against crow's feet. It is important that the hyaluronic acid molecules are made so small that they can penetrate the skin.
