Ca-AKG is the abbreviation of Calcium Alpha-Ketoglutarate (C5H4CaO5-H2O). It is a special form of mineral calcium that can be used to bring the calcium concentration in the blood back to normal. Calcium alpha-ketoglutarate binds excess phosphate and removes it as waste, restoring the normal balance of calcium and phosphate in the body. Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) vs calcium alpha-ketoglutarate (Ca-AKG)
Most alpha-ketoglutarate supplements simply contain alpha-ketoglutarate. However, scientists believe that the calcium form of alpha-ketoglutarate, namely calcium alpha-ketoglutarate (calcium AKG or Ca-AKG), is significantly superior to regular alpha-ketoglutarate, in which the alpha-ketoglutarate molecule is not linked to a calcium atom. Calcium alpha-ketoglutarate may have additional beneficial effects compared to alpha-ketoglutarate. One reason for this is that calcium alpha-ketoglutarate is absorbed more slowly in the intestine and enters the bloodstream more slowly, so it can work in the body for longer. This makes sense, since alpha-ketoglutarate is an important metabolite, which ideally is present in our body in sufficiently high concentrations for as long as possible. The alpha-ketoglutarate in most supplements is also often too low.
