What are ceramides?
Ceramides are fatty substances, also called lipids, that occur naturally in the outer layer of the skin. Together with cholesterol and fatty acids, among others, they form an important part of the natural skin barrier. This barrier helps the skin retain moisture and protects against dehydration and external influences. You can compare the skin barrier to a wall: the skin cells are the bricks, and the lipids, including ceramides, form the cement between them. When this lipid structure is less than optimal, moisture can evaporate from the skin more easily. The skin may then feel dry, tight, flaky, or more sensitive.
In English-language skincare, ceramides are usually ceramides mentioned. That is why you also come across terms such as ceramide for skin, ceramides for skin, ceramide moisturizer and moisturizer with ceramides. These terms refer to skincare containing one or more ceramides.
What do ceramides do for the skin?
Ceramides primarily support the skin's barrier function. A well-functioning skin barrier helps limit moisture loss and ensures that the skin does not feel dry or tight as quickly. Therefore, products containing ceramides are particularly popular for dry, dehydrated, sensitive, or mature skin. This does not mean that ceramides are only suitable for dry skin. Normal, combination, or oily skin also needs a well-developed lipid barrier. Especially when using active ingredients such as retinol, retinal, or exfoliating acids, paying sufficient attention to the skin barrier can be important.
In skincare, ceramides are often combined with other hydrating and skin barrier-supporting ingredients. Think, for example, of hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane, cholesterol and essential fatty acids.
What types of ceramides are there?
Ceramide is a collective name for various types of lipids. Therefore, on the INCI list of skincare products, you may come across names such as Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide NS, Ceramide EOP and Ceramide EOS.
A product does not need to contain as many different ceramides as possible to be interesting. The overall formula is at least as important. Ceramides are often combined with fatty acids, cholesterol, squalane, and moisture-binding ingredients to support the natural composition of the skin barrier as effectively as possible.

What are phytoceramides?
Phytoceramides are ceramides or ceramide compounds derived from plant sources. You will mainly encounter this term in supplements and ingredients from, for example, wheat, rice, or other plant sources.
Not every ceramide supplement is automatically a phytoceramide supplement. Therefore, when the source used is not specifically stated as plant-based, we do not use the term phytoceramides for that product.
What can you combine ceramides with?
Ceramides easily fit into almost any skincare routine. For extra hydration, you can combine them with hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Squalane, cholesterol, and fatty acids are also often used together with ceramides to support the skin barrier.
In addition, ceramides can be used effectively alongside active ingredients such as vitamin C, peptides, retinol, and retinal. Adequate hydration is especially important when using vitamin A or exfoliating acids. During the day, always finish your routine with appropriate sun protection.
