The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ consisting of two lobes. It is located at the front of the neck, in front of the larynx and against the trachea. Four arteries supply the thyroid gland with blood, making it one of the best vascularized organs in our body. The thyroid gland produces hormones from iodine and amino acids. From this the inactive hormone T4 (thyroxine) is produced. In the liver, heart and kidneys, T4 is converted into the active hormone T3 (triiodothyronine). Both hormones influence metabolic processes, which makes the thyroid gland an important organ.
