Woman compares Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1 and 24 to choose the right retinal strength for her skin
Discover why a higher retinal percentage is not always better.

The percentage of retinal in a serum indicates the concentration of the active ingredient retinaldehyde. The higher the percentage, the more powerful the serum generally is and the greater the risk of skin irritation. However, a higher percentage does not automatically mean a better result. For beginners, 0.01% or 0.03% is often a suitable starting point, while 0.1% is intended for skin that is already accustomed to vitamin A.

A serum with 0.1% contains ten times as much retinal as a serum with 0.01%. However, that does not mean your skin improves ten times faster. The composition of the serum, how regularly you use it, and how well your skin tolerates it also play an important role.

What does that percentage actually tell you?

The number on the packaging is the percentage of retinaldehyde in the product. Within a single product line, it helps to compare strengths. At Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1 if, for example, it concerns 0.01% retinal; Crystal Retinal 10 contains 0.1% of the highest percentage in the Crystal Retinal 24. A higher concentrated retinal serum is not automatically the better choice for someone just starting out.

Suppose you use a stronger serum so enthusiastically that your skin starts to flake, and then you stop using it for two weeks. A lower strength that you can gradually build up might then fit your routine better. With vitamin A, more is not automatically better.

Why the formula is at least as important

Retinal is a form of vitamin A that the skin can convert into retinoic acid. It is a reactive ingredient: packaging, stabilization, and the other components influence how much retinal remains available during use. Therefore, a percentage in itself does not indicate how two different brands compare in practice.

That difference is visible in cosmetic studies. In a randomized study of 40 women, creams with 0.05% and 0.1% retinaldehyde were compared for three months. Both groups showed improvements in skin texture and hydration; for various outcomes, there was no statistically demonstrable difference between the two concentrations. This was research into those specific creams, not all retinal serums.

Which strength suits your skin?

  • New to retinal? Start with a low strength and a limited number of evenings per week rather than immediately with a high percentage.
  • Already used to vitamin A? Only consider moving up a step when the current strength remains comfortable.
  • Drought or stings? Reduce the frequency or take a break, keep your care simple, and seek expert advice if irritation persists.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection during the day. As a precaution, it is advised against using cosmetic retinoids during pregnancy or when trying to conceive; discuss any concerns with your doctor. For all available strengths, view the Crystal Retinal overview.
